In her work, Johanna Rylle, considers the space of an image as the space of an encounter. She seeks to make the invisible visible, creating a listening and open space to hear beyond our eyes’ view. Whether it be by mixed media, printmaking or video, she pursues the creation of what could be described as a sacred moment of interaction using a large variety of materials, textures and forms bringing the unseen and the seen to the same surface. This assemblage of lines and layers in itself holds significance in the creation process as each stroke and interaction of the lights and darks together speaks to an inner and human reality. Her images, vacillating between abstract and vaguely figurative, open to meet the viewer’s own palette of experiences.

Born in New York, Johanna Rylle got her start drawing as a young child. She then graduated from Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida. After studying Surface Design at Memphis College of Art, she moved to Paris where she creates her paintings, prints and video art. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and in Paris.
